Carlton Banks, referred to by his peers as "the Parliamentarian," earned that title due to his vast knowledge in Parliamentary Procedure combined with his skill set to teach it as a course. As a prelude to his intellectual acumen, Carlton served on the NLA Chapter #1024's Board as Legal Research Chairman. His responsibilities included developing and maintaining a data bank of resource materials, statistics, and special reports that enabled the NLA to propose, and or respond to special reports authored by the Senate or Michigan Legislatures, that effected the prison population or community at large.
Carlton's dedication to his role lead him to being appointed to the NLA's National Board as the Assistant Internal Affairs Director, Internal Affairs Director, Vice President, and now currently serves as the National Board Chairman for the National Lifers of America, Inc.
As it relates to his personal experience, Carlton has received various awards for his accomplishments including the National Lifers of America Outstanding Achievement Award in 2004 and the National Lifers of America Most Influential Person Award in 2017, He has a certification in Geographical Information System Technology, Custodial Maintenance, and Microsoft Digital Literacy. He is a Youth Deterrent Mentor, and also completed his studies for Emergency Program Manager, Emergency Preparedness, Retrofitting Flood Prone ResidentialStructures through the EmergencyManagement Institute (FEMA), and Business and Investment Training. Carlton also completed his 24 month Chance For Life Training where he received his Mediation and Facilitator Certification, and has been an active Chance For Life Core Member since 2007. Carlton trains other inmates to became Mediators and Facilitators. He was recognized by his fellow Core Members as an "Extraordinary Lead Trainer." While Carlton's work ethics and professional decorum transcends the prison community, he remains an example of the type of excellence that the National Lifers of America demands of its members.
